〰️ Progress Isn’t Linear: One Conversation Changed Everything

Hi Reader!

Lately, my Instagram feed has been full of “Japanese convenience store hacks.” Quick meals. Thoughtfully packaged snacks. Full lunches assembled in minutes.

Every post makes me miss Japan a little—and reminds me how much everyday environments shape how we live.

Growing up, I assumed 7‑Eleven was Japanese. I was shocked to learn it started in the U.S. Despite sharing the same name, the experience in each country feels completely different.

In Japan, convenience stores (konbini) are woven into daily life. You can pay bills, send packages, print documents, grab dinner, and walk home safely—all within one neighborhood block. Children, teens, adults, and elders use them independently.

In the U.S., convenience stores often focus on speed—snacks, gas, quick stops—usually designed for cars rather than foot traffic.

Neither is “better.” They simply reflect their environments.

And this is exactly how I think about Occupational Therapy.

Accessibility and participation are never one-size-fits-all. The same concept can look entirely different depending on culture, safety, infrastructure, and community norms.

When I work with families, I’m not just looking at a child’s skills. I’m asking:

  • What supports already exist in their environment?
  • What barriers are shaping daily routines?
  • How can we use what’s available to make participation easier?

Just like convenience stores adapt to their context, our support strategies must align with real life—not an ideal version of it.

Sometimes the biggest insights about accessibility come from ordinary places.

If you’re navigating routines, transitions, or community participation and want support that truly fits your family’s environment, I’d love to connect.

Schedule a call or connect with me on LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook. Don't forget to share this article with fellow parents. Till next time.

Warmly,
