🧮 Recalibrate Your Goals for Growth and Renewal 🧧

Happy 2025, Reader!

As we step into the new year, it’s natural to reflect on the goals we set for ourselves. How are you feeling about yours so far? If you’re on track, fantastic!

If not, take heart—there’s no rule saying you can’t start fresh. Starting over isn’t failure; it’s resilience in action.

This year, I’m looking at goal-setting through a lens of cultural connection and renewal. Working with families from diverse backgrounds in Japan, I’m reminded that new beginnings aren’t confined to January 1.

In my own family, we also celebrate Chinese New Year on January 29, 2025—a chance to embrace fresh starts, no matter the date.

Progress Over Perfection

A lesson I love from Sharon Salzberg’s Real Happiness is this: in meditation, the most important moment isn’t perfect focus—it’s the act of starting again when your mind wanders. The same applies to life and goals. Each time you recalibrate, you’re building resilience and self-compassion.

This January, I’m re-evaluating my goals and using two structured approaches to stay on track. Whether you’re continuing last year’s goals or setting new ones, these methods can bring clarity and focus to your aspirations.

Two Goal-Setting Tools for 2025

Goal Attainment Scale (GAS)

GAS helps you track progress toward individualized goals using a 5-point scale. It’s a flexible system that accommodates setbacks while keeping you motivated.

For Example:
I realized my activity levels drop on days off work, which affects how I feel. To address this, I’m using GAS to set a specific movement goal for those days. You can view the visual here.

GAS helps me see where I stand and adjust my expectations if needed. It’s about progress, not perfection.

SMART Goals

SMART Goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Sensitive. This framework is a clear and actionable way to turn aspirations into accomplishments.

For Example:
Instead of saying, “I want to read more,” a SMART goal would be:
"I will read one book a month (12 total) by December 31, 2025."

Breaking it down:

  • Specific: 12 books in 12 months.
  • Measurable: One book per month.
  • Achievable: Realistic for most readers.
  • Relevant: Aligns with personal growth.
  • Time-bound: Clear deadline.

Let’s Make 2025 Your Year

Whether you choose GAS, SMART, or another method, remember: the key to success is persistence, not perfection. Starting over when needed is a strength, not a setback.
