Thinking About a Weighted Blanket for Your Child? Read This First.

Hi Reader!

It started with a question from my sister:

“What type of weighted blanket do you recommend?”

As a pediatric OT and sister, I get this question often—from families navigating bedtime battles, sensory overwhelm, or simply looking for tools to help their child feel more settled.

So… are weighted blankets worth it?

The short answer: It depends.

Weighted blankets can be helpful—but only if they’re the right fit. In my latest blog post, I break down:

  • The ideal age to start (hint: not before age 5–6)
  • Why “for your body, not your bed” is key to choosing the right size
  • My personal experience with Bearaby and YNM blankets
  • When they work—and when they slide right off the bed
  • What the actual research says (spoiler: it’s still limited)
  • Real talk on care and maintenance (and how not to break your washer)

Takeaway

Weighted blankets are a tool, not a cure. They’re most effective when matched to your child’s specific sensory needs and routines.

🧠 Curious if a weighted blanket—or another strategy—might help your child feel more grounded? I now offer Virtual Parent Consultations designed for families like ours—cross-cultural, multilingual, and often in-between systems.

No diagnosis required, just a safe space to explore what’s going on and what could help.
